B.M. Music Education – Metropolitan State College

M. Mus. Music Education – University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Levels I, II, III – Orff-Schulwerk

I am from Denver, Colorado and moved to Las Vegas in 1989. I’ve been a music teacher in the Clark County School District for twenty-five years teaching Elementary Music. I have a bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Metropolitan State College in Denver, Colorado and a Master’s degree in Music from the University of Nevada in Las Vegas. I am certified in all three Levels of Orff and Arts Integration.

Students learn to sing a variety of repertoire including multi-cultural, seasonal, patriotic, and folk songs. A variety of melodies and accompaniments for songs are learned on the barred instruments, and recorders are used in grades three through five to teach melodies. Speech poems are used in the upper grades to develop coordination of speech with layered rhythm accompaniments. Creative movement is taught in the lower grades and a variety of folk-dances are learned in the upper grades. Children dramatize stories through the use of puppets and musical instruments in the lower grades. All grade levels do a minimum of one integrated – thematic unit during the year. The thematic units used for the lower grades include “All About Me,” “Shapes,” and “Patterns.” Upper grades do units on “Heroes” and “Theme and Variations.”

In addition to being a teacher, I am also a professional jazz pianist and church organist. I had a jazz quartet that performed in the Denver area for five years and also did numerous performances with duos and trios. I had the opportunity to perform concerts with five major international jazz performers. In Las Vegas, I have been featured as an artist and composer for the Nevada Jazz Society. I have several compositions that are published and recorded. I’ve performed and conducted clinics at several jazz festivals including the Mile High Jazz Festival in Colorado. I am featured on several jazz albums including small groups and big bands. I have worked at the Sahara Hotel and the Desert Inn and continue to perform as a church organist.
